Christmas Crack AKA Fools Toffee

The first taste of Christmas Crack can truly leave an unforgettable mark on one’s memory. It’s amazing how a simple combination of saltine crackers, butter, brown sugar, chocolate, and optional additions like nuts or festive sprinkles—can come together to create a treat that embodies the essence of the holidays.

Years ago a co-worker of mine gifted me some Christmas Crack, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer. I was hooked! Couldn’t resist asking for the recipe. Now, whenever the holidays swing by, I get a kick out of whipping up a batch to share with friends and family. It’s become a bit of a tradition.

The cool thing about homemade treats like Christmas Crack isn’t just how insanely good they taste. It’s the memories they bring, the happiness they spread—all part of that holiday magic. *The traditional recipe calls for saltine crackers, additional substitutes are Graham Crackers or Ritz peanut butter sandwiches. Substitutes for semi-sweet chocolate could be, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips or Biscoff spread.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 stacks of saltine crackers
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Maldon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°. Line a 10×15 inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray
  2. Place your saltine crackers in even rows and set aside
  3. In a saucepan over medium high heat melt the butter and brown sugar, stir occasionally and let it come to boil, when entire surface boils, boil for 4 additional minutes
  4. Pour butter & sugar mixture over the saltines and spread out
  5. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips and let it sit 2-3 minutes, then spread evenly
  6. Sprinkle with chopped pecans and a little salt and lightly press into the chocolate. Refrigerate until cool
  7. Remove from pan and cut into pieces
  8. Store in airtight container in fridge for 1-2 weeks
